Maybe this has arisen because my desktop PC hardware is 4 years old and newer motherboards are better integrated with modern Linux, but this is what I needed to do to solve this problem.Ĭaveat – if you’re not comfortable running your PC without fans for a time, don’t bother going any further. There are various articles around on the internet, but this has been a constant problem for me so I thought I’d collect together all the info I need to provide a reference for the future. As this isn't really a fix any help is still appreciated. On my desktop computer, I am able to control the fans under Windows using software provided by the motherboard manufacturer, but it is not obvious how to do this under Ubuntu. Since I lose control of my fans after my laptop wakes up from suspend, I turned off suspend. I upgraded to Cosmic Cuttlefish to see if that would solve any problems, it didn't. Output of lsmod | grep -i asus: asus_nb_wmi 28672 0įor now I have given up on fancontrol working. So it only finds coretemp, but shouldn't asus be one since that's where the fan control is? If you have some drivers built into your kernel, the list above willĬontain too many modules. To load everything that is needed, add this to /etc/modules: * Chip `Intel digital thermal sensor' (confidence: 9) Sensors-detect output after saying yes for everything: Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done. Starting automatic fan control., but doesn't progress INTERVAL=10ĭEVPATH=hwmon4=devices/platform/asus-nb-wmi Also from switching to Ubuntu from Arch, the place where the pwm that controls the fan switched from hwmon3 to hwmon4 and I don't know if that is any indication as to what could be wrong.įancontrol configuration that I tried to write: Sensors-detect only finds coretemp and because pwmconfig doesn't think I have fan sensors it doesn't generate a config file. If I start my laptop while plugged in the fans will be around 2500 RPM or off. The cpu_fan sensors will either say -1 or 25500 RPM after awakening from hibernate. I tried ignoring this and writing a configuration file for fancontrol, but I couldn't get it to work. pwmconfig says that I have no working fan sensors. I've had this issue of my fan not working properly on Manjaro, Arch, Fedora, and Ubuntu. See doc/fan-divisors for more information. You may also need to increase the fan divisors. Make sure you have a 3-wire fan connected. There are no working fan sensors, all readings are 0. ![]() Giving the fans some time to reach full speed. Physically verify that the fans have been to full speed However, it is ** very important ** that you The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speedĪfter testing. ![]() We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls. Note that many motherboards do not have pwmĬircuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm. This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)Ĭontrols, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on ![]() Pwm_config output: # pwmconfig revision 6243 ()
